Characteristics of Lynch syndrome in 13 Hispanic Families

چکیده
Background While the incidence of colorectal cancer is lower in Hispanics than in non-Hispanic Caucasians, it is the second most common cancer in this diverse ethnic population. Emerging data indicate hereditary colon cancer syndromes contribute to cancer burden regardless of race and ethnicity. These data derive from research and cohorts where Hispanics are underrepresented. Here we report on 14 individuals from 13 Hispanic families with Lynch syndrome. Methods After referral for cancer risk assessment, immunohistochemical staining was performed for the four MMR gene products and/or analysis of the appropriate gene(s) was initiated.

More than two decades ago, Henry T. Lynch reported a hereditary non polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) which is seen in some families with dominant mode of inheritance, also know as Lynch Syndrome type I and II. This form to hereditary colorectal cancer has an early age of onset (Less than 45 years) with predominantly proximal colonic involvement (type I) and can also be associated with extrac...
متن کاملHereditary Nonpolyposis Colorectal Cancer (HNPCC)/Lynch Syndrome: Surveillance and Diagnostic strategies
Introduction: Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC, Lynch syndrome) is an autosomal dominant genetic disease. The disease is caused by a mutation in one of four genes of the DNA mismatch repair system and increases the risk for various cancers, especially the uterine and colon cancers. The prevalence of this disease in the general population is about 1 in 500 and it causes about 2-3...
متن کاملProspective results of surveillance colonoscopy in dominant familial colorectal cancer with and without Lynch syndrome.
BACKGROUND & AIMS Lynch syndrome is an autosomal dominant predisposition to colorectal cancer caused by mutations in DNA mismatch repair genes; colorectal cancer risk is high. Few studies have addressed colorectal cancer risk in individuals from dominant families without mismatch repair deficiency. We sought to establish whether these individuals are also at increased risk by examining the inci...
متن کاملFamilial cancer among consecutive uterine cancer patients in Sweden
BACKGROUND Uterine cancer (UC) represents 5.1% of all female malignancies in Sweden. Accumulation of UC in families occurs in around 5% of cases. We wanted to identify any familial association between UC and other selected cancers and to study the frequency of Lynch,Cowden and cancer syndromes among consecutive UC patients in Sweden. METHODS 481 UC patients were included. Information on the c...
متن کاملReport of a Novel Mutation in MLH1 Gene in a Hispanic Family from Puerto Rico Fulfilling Classic Amsterdam Criteria for Lynch Syndrome
In Puerto Rico, colorectal cancer (CRC) represents the second leading cause of cancer in men and women. Familial CRC accounts for 10-15% of the total CRC cases, while Lynch syndrome accounts for approximately 2-4% of cases. Limited information is available about the prevalence, clinical manifestations, and genetic mutations of hereditary CRC in US Hispanic individuals. In this paper we report a...
